Sega Master System No Power/No Video

My buddy gave me his old Model 1 Sega Master System as he couldn't get any video but it powered up, so I got it and some games/controllers for free.

I noticed he gave me a 3rd party adapter with it, so I grabbed my model 1 genesis ac and tried it but got no power so I looked at the ac adapter he was trying and its rated as such

OUTPUT - 12VAC 0.33A, which is AC power and the system needs DC, so I called him and he confirmed with that adapter the power light comes on but nothing more. I'm not going to try to use it but does this sound like a DOA system? I know there is fuses that can be replaced but not really going to spend hours trying to fix it.

tl;dr Sega Master System with wrong a/c adpater using ac appears to give power but proper ac adapter using d/c gives no power

  • Here's a good power guide:

As for the video signal, I recently had a few MS that didn't work with RF but worked fine with an AV cable. RF seems more prone to go bad ime.
  • That is an awesome guide and the one I found last night which let me know the model 1 genesis adapter should work but as such it doesn't.

I know the NES adapter gives out AC which is never meant to be used, looking up the adapter my buddy gave me its for some AUDIOVOX phone... I'm almost certain this system is fried or a fuse went but I won't spend time soldering for it.

Just need a firm Yay or Nay or whether its most likely toast
  • You could try replacing the 7805 voltage regulator (or two, I can't remember how many it has) and see if that helps at all. It's a chip with 3 legs and is normally screwed onto a heatsink and it'll say in some form "7805" on it. I don't think the SMS has a fuse in it.

If you don't want to try fixing it yourself, you can always send it to someone who can. I'd be willing to troubleshoot it.

Still pains me to see this sort of thing occurring. Why oh why the fuck did Nintendo make their NES AC adapter output AC? That's quite possible THE stupidest thing Nintendo has ever done. That AC adapter has been the cause of death to many a SMS and Genesis for no good reason...
  • You may already have learned this but I think the Sega Master System required 9v and 1 amp of current. DC voltage. Thing about DC is that you have to make sure it is getting the correct polarity or it won't give the system power. You need to determine whether the inside pin is negative or positive and the same for the outside sleeve on the end that plugs into the system. Usually there is a schematic on it that will tell you. You could always chop/swap the wires, plug it in and see if it fires. Anyway hope that wasn't confusing....

So make sure it has DC output, because AC won't work. THEN make sure that your DC output is the correct Polarity.
