Problem with SNES Cart

Hi All,

I have a quick question. I pulled out my SNES after a couple of years and my copy of Super Metroid isn't working anymore. The game starts up ok and when you start a new file it goes through the story but when you reach the point that you land on the first planet Samus dies. There is no way around it.. I am just curious if this is something that has happened to anyone else or if people have any idea what is wrong with it.

I am also quite sure that the save battery is dead because I had issues saving games to the cart when I played the game last a few years ago.

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Thanks,

Justin

  • lol really..you sure it is not you lol..i guess if you could..could u post a video of this?? If not have you tried cleaning the game?

I dont think the save battery has anything to do with it..you could just maybe take the battery out and play it thru to see what happens??
  • If it was truly a Battery issue I would recommend putting it in the SNES powering it up and letting it 'charge' for like 3 days or more. It has worked for me on more than one game tho I doubt its a permanent fix.

I dont think this is battery related tho. really a video would help or more detail. like exactly when she dies, and if its the exact same spot/time every time. Is it like the game is forgetting to give you health? since you collect E-tanks throughout the game maybe health is tied to the battery and therefore no battery = no health = death for our beloved bounty hunter? no thats not right cause once the game has power from the system it will save battery or no until its powered down at the least.
  • Thanks for the responses.

I cleaned the game (Windex / Q-tip on connectors) and it did not change anything. I will try to post a video in the next day or so and maybe you will have a better idea of what I mean. It is really bizarre...
  • My buddy bought a Super Metroid that did the same thing. He thought it was battery related so I repaired it for him. No change. Still didnt work properly.
  • You can always disconnect the battery for like 10 minutes and then add a new one, some NES agmes don't boot with corrupt RAM, maybe this title is the same way? I know the original Metroid doesn't like dirty RAM. Good luck man.
  • Corrupted RAM should only affect saved games, not booting up, unless they do an entire checksum on the SRAM to validate that it's 100% legit and not just a clear flag or "I have a save game here" flag.
  • Corrupt RAM SHOULD only affect saved games, but there's some bad programming out there. And not ALL SRAM is used for saving, some is ued for scratchpad and variable storage too a lot of the time. SMB3 IIRC uses 7KB for decompressed levels and about 1KB for gameplay stuff. It's not battery backed, but it's a good example.
  • Ah, good point.
