Two of my favorite titles of this gen are Bioshock and Amnesia. Bioshock was so cohesive with its sound design, music, and art direction. Amnesia was terrifying and had great sound design and music. The story and visuals also helped to set the mood of the game. It's literally a game that is only fun because of the atmosphere. Without the SFX, music, brilliant art design, and story, it would be pretty obvious that there are essentially no core gameplay mechanics at all, except a couple puzzles and walking around a castle. The atmosphere is what makes the game worth playing.
How about Dear Esther? It's so atmospheric it's almost not even a game at all. You just walk around an island uncovering a story. Great visuals and great sound though.
Almost forgot Bro,,, I love the sounds of Super Mario 64's Jolly Roger Bay/Dire Dire Docks!!! So soothing...
I have that on my iPod! And sometimes I listen to it when I go to bed!
Did you ever play Fear Effect? It is one of my favorite series of all time, even though it only lasted two games. The music was GREAT. It was totally atmospheric, and ranged from Asian to industrial. Check this out:
That was good stuff.
Oh, these also came to my mind after I posted this:
