I'm a Noob Looking for a Gaming PC

I'm maybe looking into getting a gaming PC or laptop.  I don't know alot about either but I'm leaning more toward a laptop.  What should I look for for best quality and price?  What brands are best?

  • If your getting a desktop, dont buy retail. Have someone that knows what they are doing build you one. Better price, better quality, better warranties on part. Laptop wise....thats a pretty vague question. There are all sorts of ranges on gaming notebooks. Just depends on what games you want to play and what your budget is.
  • I'm looking at games like Star Wars: The Old Republic or League of Legends. Maybe even Mass Effect or Battlefield, but is a gaming PC worth it for games like those or should I stick with my PS3 for them?

I really don't know my budget right now but I don't want to spend $2000 or anything like that.
  • you can get a killer gaming desktop for under $1000.  Laptops range grossly.  I am always an advocator of PC gaming as there are exclusives you cant play on consoles.  And if your an MMO fan, you gotta have a pc.  SW is good, LoL is retty awesome too.  If your PC is spec'd to handle high res textures with all the eye candy turned up, there is nothing like it.
  • How often do you have to upgrade hardware and how much does that usually cost? Do you upgrade gaming laptops or do they just eventually go obsolete?
  • Yeah, I'd advise just take a chance and learn how to piece one together on newegg. For $700, you can get a HELL of a system that no store would dare carry. An 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD @ 6.0Gb/s, 3.0 Ghz x64 AMD quad-core processor computer sounds expensive, but a whole system with those kinda of parts would probably only be about $750 for all of it if you put it together. It'll beat anything in stores. If you don't wanna do that, call up your geekiest friend and he'll probably help you with that.

And hardware is obsolete when it's off the production line. But a computer like about would be a good gaming rig for about a year or two, then be okay for probably 2 more. So about 4-5 years, more if you can handle the settings on "low" for gaming. After you're done with that rig, I'd probably try to sell it or piece it out and put it twords another computer, it's not worth upgrading one little piece at a time. When technology is old, it's all old, not one piece of it.
  • Do what i do, rock a dual xeon 5580 nephalem motherboard with 32 gigs of 10600 ddr3 with a gtx 560 love server workstations hah!
  • My experience is that laptops are a big "no no" when it comes to gaming. You get a lot more out of a desktop computer when it comes to price and performance. Another critical part that laptops lack, is cooling. So my tip is to find someone that knows what they're doing, and have that person put together a computer for you. preferably one that have water cooling. It is also easier to do small upgrades on a desktop computer, which you usually can't do on a laptop.

I my self are putting together a computer now. I want a beast, and have already selected parts for about $2200. Probably going to end up with closer to $3000 when I'm done. If you don't have that much money, you can still get a very decent computer for $1000 or less these days!
  • What about sound system and HD monitor? What should I look for in those and other necessary accessories?

Are you building a Mac or what?!

And as for sound, I think unless you do professional stuff, just use on board sound or something like a $40 sound card. Sound on board should be fine for most stuff. Everyone who's built a PC that I've helped have went with on board sound and never have heard a complaint like "I need a better sound card" so I think it's fine. And I'd suggest at least 1080p, on computers you don't have to follow 1920x1080 as the max resolution. My laptop I'm on is 1024x768, but when I use my schools crap PC's with a huge 2200xSomething resolution, I really miss it when I get home as some windows on my programs just can't fit. HD is a big screen, but that's not the highest resolution.
