SNES emulator that can disable sprites/background?

I've checked quite a few SNES emulators and haven't found one with such a GFX emulation feature. Anybody know of one that can disable sprites/background/foreground?

  • I don't think any, none have as many features like that as NES emulators. But with the recently released NO$SNES, it has some (early and possibly buggy) but useful debugging features like viewing all background and sprite OAM data and all that stuff.
  • I know ZSNES could (using the number keys) but I haven't run recent builds.

I used the DOS version back in the day.

You could disable all kinds of layers.

I remember having to disable the water layer in Mega Man X because they hadn't figured out transparency at the time.

    Ah, the good ol' days...
  • Still these days, I myself doubt ZSNES is much better than it was back then. It's the NESTICLE of SNES emulators.
  • Both ZSNES and SNES9X have these features with the top row # keys.

I'm not sure about ZSNES, but I know SNEX9x has this layout:

    1: Toggle BG#1 on/off

    2: Toggle BG#2 on/off

    3: Toggle BG#3 on/off

    4: Toggle BG#4 on/off

    5: Toggle sprites on/off

    6: Swap Controls

    7: Change Control Type

    8: Graphic Clip Windows on/off

    9: Transparency on/off

    0: HDMA Emulation on/off
  • Not sure what your beef with ZSNES is, but I always liked it better than SNES9x. Bouncy has it right, both have ways to toggle bg's and sprites on and off.

I don't have a beef with it, it's just an inaccurate emulator. That is all.
  • Ah, thanks very much guys, SNES9X works fine for what I need now. I didn't know the number keys could do that.

If accuracy is what you are looking for, I highly suggest BSnes http://byuu.org/bsnes/ (just look at "Why accuracy matters" for more info).

However it does lack the feature Guntz is needing, as I dont see a way to toggle layer/sprites on/off
  • Trust me, I know of BSnes, I really enjoy it. Thanks for the recommendation though. And Byuu may be open to adding those features, you could always mail him on NESDev.
  • I've used ZSNES and I know it is a great emulator, though I haven't used it in a few years, so maybe it is outdated, I don't know. I know that it can enable/disable specific background/sprite layers. I give it a +1 for being a great emulator.
