Tales of Graces f

Anyone else looking forward to this? I just pre-ordered it a few days ago from Gamestop, for the bonuses. I'll probably have it about a week after the release, since I pre-ordered it from the online store and didn't choose the fastest shipping.

I still need to play Vesperia as well.

  • Oooh yeah you know it lol I'm getting one and not opening it and getting another to play I collect tales stuff ;D
  • Reminds me that I still have a Tales of Vesperia sitting around unopened. I really need to crack that thing open and get to playing, either that or Tales of Abyss. I got into a hardcore RPG buying phase and yeah, I get distracted.
  • Which Tales of Vesperia do you have? normal or limited? lol I wouldn't open it if its limited its worth a good amount $200ish i think?
  • nah, it's just the normal one and the guide. I've been meaning to play a good RPG for awhile. I have lots of stuff I should dig up.
  • Once I clean my plate off a little more I'll get Tales of the Abyss 3DS as it looks like fun, but I know Mass Effect 3 being out that will need to be taken down first once I get it.
  • Tales of the Abyss is pretty good so far, but story-wise it's nothing special really. If you're looking for an interesting story, play Symphonia.
  • Had it, finished it, sat on it for a few years and sold it last year when I was clearing out a lot of stuff. Downsized my GC collection to a dozen games of which 10 are first party as the rest I could live without. Symphonia was truly a fantastic game story or not I just enjoyed how it played as Tales games are unique (as was the PSP UK import Tales of Eternia I had too a few years back.)
  • Why'd you sell it? Symphonia is amazing, as you said!
  • I had no interest and especially no time to play it again so I made sure it went to someone who would play it not likely resell it.
  • As someone who played the hell out of Symphonia and 1000/1000'd Vesperia, I can safely say that I'm all ready for Graces f. I've even got Gwyndion to pre-order it for me so I don't have to wait for the EU release.
  • Is Xillia coming here? I kinda wanted that one.
  • Hmm from what I've read it depends on how well Graces and abyss for the 3DS does over here so support the series we need more tales games over here in the US ;D
  • can you tell us whats it about for those who dont know the series?

The Tales of series is a set of JRPGs made by Namco/Namco Bandai. They're similar in nature to Final Fantasy in that they aren't really related to one another other than common themes seen throughout all of the games in the series.

Combat wise, they are real time battles on a sort of 2D plane in a 3D environment. By this I mean in more recent games, you move on a 2D plane going back and forth with up to jump and what have you. However, there is a "Free Run" button which allows you to move freely within the combat space to avoid enemy attacks etc. It also has a decent combo system in which you can link normal attacks into special attacks known as Artes. There are 3 types of artes, usually beginner, intermediate and advanced for spells and base, arcane and altered. As you level up and gain more skills you can then link basic artes into arcane artes and so on. This allows for flashy combos that deal decent damage without fear of retaliation (except most bosses which can get out of them quite often).

As far as stories go, some of them are fairly run-of-the-mill/ what you'd expect from a JRPG, while others are a little more atypical. In general though, they tend to have some good twists to keep you interested.

There's also a decent amount of sidequests and opportunities to combine items to make better weapons and armour, as well as a coliseum that pits you against varying amounts of enemies.

All in all, it's a very good series and I'm just going to stop this brief explanation here before I go on all night. Definitely worth looking into if you ask me.

  • Yeah, they're basically anime-styled Final Fantasy with a real-time battle system.

Also, there are skits in each game in the series (probably, or at least most of them). When you see a button prompt at the bottom of the screen, along with a title, you view the skit if you press that button. These are short interactions between the characters, showing their portraits with facial expressions and sometimes even their full body. These really help to flesh out the characters, and is something other JRPG series should learn from.
  • I have it coming from Gamefly this week, but no time to play it. I'm still working on Syndicate, SSX, and Mass Effect 3. Looks to be a great game.
  • My preorder bonus code was emailed today, and the game is arriving here tomorrow.
  • Tell me how it is please, I'm going to have to wait a week or two for it to get here from America.
  • Sure, I will. I'll post my first impressions after it comes in and I play it a bit tomorrow.
  • I've got the game now.. but I don't have a PS3. Lol. Picking up a PS3 this weekend however. I just wanted to make sure I got the preorder bonuses above all else first, as minor as they are.
  • Apparently my copy isn't arriving until tomorrow. =(
  • Just wondering how is everyone enjoying the game? I just got my two copies the other day as I said one open 1 sealed..awww yeeeah

  • I wish I had mine, but it's been sitting in Jackson, MS for the past two days, is supposed to arrive today, and it's 4:25 PM and I'm still waiting. Jackson is only about 2 hours away from here, so something has to be wrong.
  • I received my copy yesterday, but no time to play it yet due to moving. I'll try it this weekend.
  • Mine is on its way. Who knows how it'll be, America to England posting takes anything from 4 days to 4 weeks.

Hopefully it's sooner rather than later, I want to play it now.
  • I finally got my copy a few days ago, after going through hell with UPS and Gamestop for a refund. Went and picked it up at GS' store.

I'm currently on chapter 2 in the adult arc, and I'm enjoying it a lot so far. The child arc isn't anything that interesting, and parts of it are cheesy, but the adult arc is so much fun. The gameplay is awesome, and all of its mechanics with things like dualizing make it arguably better than the other Tales games I've played (just speaking gameplay-wise here). SP (or whatever it was called in the other games ) is gone; now you have Cryas Points or something. Basically each weapon has a maximum amount of CP, and each action takes a certain amount. You chain attacks using your CP, and the more Artes you use on the A-Arte tree, the more CP you consume. Things like guarding, evading, and generally just fighting well increase the CP from its base at the start of a battle. It will recover automatically if you don't take any action for a few seconds.

A-Artes are basically just normal attacks, while B-Artes are the traditional type of Artes we always see in the Tales games. B-Artes also take CP, and they're more powerful, but they're slower and leave you open to counterattacks. It's generally best to chain them from A-Artes. And that's just the basic premise of the gameplay. It's pretty good all around. Really enjoying it so far.

    Oh, and skits are voiced.
  • I loved it...I beat it with a friend via co-op..sort of... 2 player battles! we had so much fun lol the only thing that really bothered me about graces is the fact they took the over world out and its sort of like FF13 for the most part anyways have fun!
  • I tried it today and it's a pretty good game
  • Yeah, the whole linearity is kind of lame. I'm just going back to town after having to visit some Valkines Cryas in a particular desert ruin. The combat system took some getting used to, but now that I actually have some CC it's not so bad. I'm taking it fairly slow though, as I'm playing through it co-op and so I can only play when my friend is here.
