  • I love this game, but could never get fare in it. I keep dieing I think at the 4th or 5th level after the swimming stage.
  • For anyone who likes the first TMNT game on the NES, I'd also encourage them to play Getsu Fuuma Den on the famicom. It's a game that plays very similarly to TMNT but does everything better. It's the game that I think TMNT borrowed most of its gameplay elements from.

    Getsu Fuma Den

    TMNT

Ok, has this happend to anyone - the game is so damn hard on the NES after about 10 tries you switch over to an emulator just to beat it?

No. Emulation and save states are for wimps.

... in all seriousness, I don't consider that beating the game.
  • TMNT kicks so much ass that I don't even mind that I suck at it.

Really? Even if you use the emulator but don't use anything to alter the game from the original NES experience? I use emulators to play the games I don't currently own a hard copy of, but I am dead against using save states and the like. I think they dilute the experience.

For TMNT1 lovers out there, here goes my challenge: finish it with just one turtle. I've done it with Leonardo. IMO this was one of the first NES games I owned as a kid, so I had lots, and lots and lots... and lots of practice . And stocking up scrolls. And knowing where will the technodrome show up (most likely)on one try. And finding a way to keep the laser creeps getting out of your way in the path to Shredder. Enough tips, game on!

It should be a doable challenge, except it's been years since i fired up the game last so I'd need a few runs to get back into it.  I play 90% of the game with Leonardo anyway, so I can't see it being too tough...now, if Raphael or Michaelangelo were the solo turtles, that'd be impressive, because Raph is only really good in a couple spots, and Mike sucks in almost every situation.

I like Getsu Fuma Den, but not as much as tmnt..  I don't really find them to have a similar feel, although they do use similar gameplay elements.  I felt Getsu Fuma Den had much more of a RPG feel to it whereas tmnt is more action based, and I didn't like the maze in the upper world where you can only see a bit at a time, and going the wrong way means you have to redo a bunch of stuff.  I actually thought this game felt a lot more like link to me that ninja turtles.
  • Anybody else get stuck in the 3rd level? You know down in the sewer there is a small gap you have to cross to move ahead? But the ceiling is so low that it's almost impossible to jump across? Out of about 100 times I played it, I made it pass that point twice. I didn't get much further those two times either.

Years later I saw the angry video game review on the game. ALL YOU HAD TO DO WAS WALK OVER IT. Arrgh! My sister and I cracked up after seeing that review! It could have saved me a bunch of heartache as a kid.

If you try walking over it you actually just walk into the water.  The trick is to tap jump.  Most people have lead thumbs and will hold the jump button (I still do it out of habit), but if you do that, you jump higher...causing you to hit your head and fall into the drink.  If you tap jump, you jump slightly lower, giving you the extra forward distance.  This works on the last jump in level 2 before getting to the top of the dam, but that one's a bit more forgiving to lead-thumbed players.
  • Yeah it's the same jump as getting the missiles at the beginning of the stage.
