Resident Evil Operations Raccoon City

I wasn't expecting it until tomorrow, so I am pretty excited about it. I ordered the Capcom Direct Special Edition and it came in the mail today....

The sign actually came sealed, so I was happy about that (figured they wouldn't even bother sealing it). The steelbook is really nice and came with a slip cover. There was also a card that comes with a code for extra guns and costumes. It also came with two patches. I don't plan on opening the patches or the sign.

  • very sweet set

  • I can't wait to hear what the game is like. Resident Evil 2 is my favorite of the series. I just hope there's actually a decent single player to this, from the trailers it's looked a little like a multiplayer fest.
  • I'm not much of a Resident Evil fan (mainly because I haven't given it a chance yet), but that looks really, really cool.
  • The game is set during the same time as Resident Evil 2. You start out as a member of Umbrella's special forces. Hunk is your commander which is pretty cool. In the first sequence, you are going after William Birkin's G-Virus samples (like in the RE2 FMV where Birkin injects himself after being shot). So far, I have only shot other human forces, but I just started playing. The online match making is jacked up right now, so I haven't been able to try it out online yet. You can play the campaign with three other friends at the same time. I bet that would be awesome. Will give further updates as I progress.

Man I'm hoping it's not a multiplayer game. I love the original Resident Evils so I'm hoping they keep some of that in the game.

This game is a shooter all the way. There are zombies and I have been attacked by WIlliam Birkin as well, but a lot of the enemies are government forces and there is a lot of gunplay. Run and shoot, diving and shooting, hand to hand combat, etc. Its basically only Resident Evil in name and theme. Its decent so far. I think it would be a helluva lot of fun if played online or co-op with friends.

Sounds like a lot of fun; I may have to rent it.

Are there any plans for a Resident Evil that closer resembles the first few installments?

I really doubt it. Resident Evil 6 sounds like it's gonna follow along the Resident Evil 4 and 5 route. Quite honestly, I had a blast with both of those games and if the future of the series is more kickass quality games, how can I complain?

It would be cool to see something along the lines of the Resident Evil remake though. I'm not sure if the odd camera and tank controls would be adopted well these days. In any case, Resident Evil Gears Edition sounds pretty cool. I love some good third person shooters, it's such an underrated genre.

I don't have a PS3 or XBOX so I haven't played any of 5 but I played 4 and loved it. I thought it was the perfect blend of new and old.

It might be a tad overkill but I would love them to recreate 2, 3 and Code Veronica with updated graphics. I loved what they did with the first remake on the Gamecube and wish they would have done the same for the other remakes.
  • Well keep me up to date on this I want to know if it's worth my time.

RE4 didn't sit well with me because it still was tank like control and low ammo and health yields, so I skipped 5. I dug into the 3DS title and that one actually shocked me as it IS fun for once. You do get enough ammo, health is good, I love scanning for hidden stuff, and the controls aren't so wooden anymore either. I've been told that RER 3DS handles like RE5, if YOU or someone in here knows this I may have to rush out and buy that. That said, how does this one handle with controls, life, ammo? You make it sound more fluid action based with a good actiony setup like the 3DS title.
  • How did you get that awesome sign?? And you said you got the Capcom Direct Special Edition. Does that mean the special edition I ordered on Amazon will be a little different?
  • It's fun, but the online hit detection for match making is pretty bad.
  • If you order the game from the Capcom store you get that sign.. I ordered 1 today just for the sign after i saw this post and yea they are still available =D
  • Just checked at the store and it's out of stock. Dammit...

Oh well, I guess my amazon order will suffice.  Not that I'm complaining because I got it for free anyways.

I just checked it out.  They're out of stock for 360, but still have ps3 available.

The things you said about RE4 is what I like about that and the previous ones. For me it makes it challenging having to conserve ammo and using your herbs sparingly. I started off playing RE1 when it came out so the controls never bugged me since I knew no different. I haven't played any of the handheld RE games except Gaiden but that was on an emulator and it crapped out.

  • The handheld REs have been pretty terrible really, the 3DS one basically runs on the MT engine and just happens to be a modern RE on a portable is all.

I've had RE1(GC), RE2(N64), Codename Veronica (DC), Zero (GC), and 4 (GC) and the only ones I ever enjoyed much to at least knock off half before I got sick of the style was 2 and CV, and CV I took as far as the tyrant fight on the cargo plane, but the game has a bad design thing to me in that you need the bazooka but they don't tell you that, and if you shelve it, and then try and get it from the locker on the plane it's not allowed so you're stuck saved at a fail point as you can't eject him otherwise.  After forgetting and doing that to myself twice in a row I never went back to it as I didn't want to re-do the whole thing a third time.  RE2 I went into the area with spiders and some but not farther.  RE4 I gave up on after the lake thing and the giant in the pen early on as I just didn't like how the game handled much.  So really the ammo/life thing is secondary to me, but I hate with so many undead that easily latch on you get deprived of a lot of ammo.

On Code Veronica I just use the bow with the explosive arrows; after a 10 or 12 of those he'll go right on out. But man you reminded me of this time in Code Veronica where you need the fire extinguisher in the first and second disk. The first time I played it I wasn't aware of that so I left the extinguisher in the metal box at the beginning so it doesn't follow you like your item chest will. I got into the second disk and realized where it was and that I couldn't go back since I was in now in the Antarctic. I had to start the game over; man I was one pissed off seventh grader!

  • You can order the regular edition and still get the sign. If thats all you want.

CV's battle with the Tyrant on the plane is tough if you don't prepare (and yes, I too messed up by not conserving ammo before this).  When I did the "2nd" playthrough, I saved up all of my explosive bow gun arrows (at least 60!) and saved it all for him.  Cakewalk.

I played a little bit of Chris' part and just haven't gotten back into it since (that was like 4 years ago).

You should absolutely replay RE2 and RE4 (RE2 being the better of the two in my opinion, but that's just because I think RE2 is the best Resident Evil game).

  • It looks pretty sweet, I have to say. I might have to pre-order now. Does anyone know if you can get the Special Edition anywhere in the UK? I don't really have time to look right now.

But what am I going to do with another copy of the game?  As cool as the sign is, I don't see a point unless they sold it separately (or even mixed with other goodies).
  • All special editions will include the steelbook and probably the code for the extra content as well. The Capcom direct just came with the sign (which is awesome) and the embroidered patches (which don't really even look resident evil like to me). Here are my thoughts on the game so far...

    - If you like third person shooters and Resident Evil, then you will most likely enjoy this game. Online is fun, but the hit detection is a bit off, they need to increase the maximum look speed also and a few other minor things. I'm sure there will be patches in the future to help fix these things. You should have played Slant 6's previous online game when it first came out (Socom Confrontation). It was completely broken at first. I was impressed with the online play this one bolstered at launch. I expected it to be more broken coming from Slant 6.

    - The concept of the competitive online play is awesome. Imagine a gears/socom-like 3rd person feel in a Resident Evil universe. Zombies, hunters, lickers, litter the map. The objective is to not only kill the opposing team, but also take out the BOWs. You get points toward your team's score for killing pretty much anything. Zombies are like 10 points, Lickers 25, Hunters 75, other team 75, etc. I haven't killed a Tyrant yet, so I don't know how much you get for those. Its best to not take one on by yourself, lol. This is a cool idea because even if you aren't very good at online shooters, you can still help your team tremendously by taking out BOWs and healing your teammates with herbs.

    - Here is an example of what happened earlier today. I was in a pretty heated gun fight (it takes a decent amount to kill on this game. More than CoD, but less than Halo. Reminds me of socom 2 life expectancy during gunfights. also reminds me of socom 2's hit detection which isn't a good thing, but oh well). Anyway, I was in a gun fight, was near death, had to reload and knew I was dead. Suddenly, a Hunter jumps out of nowhere (from the top of a train) and spears the guy who was shooting at me. I reloaded and as the hunter had my opponent pinned, I blasted him into nothingness. It was sweet.

    - If any of you played Left 4 Dead, the hunters on this game can pin you, but they don't stay on you like they did in Left 4 Dead. You get a chance to get up afterwards (which is good). Zombies are really just a nuisance unless you get swarmed or are bleeding bad. If you start bleeding bad, they go crazy and swarm you. Kind of like getting puked on in Left 4 Dead. If you fall down in a crowd of zombies, you might as well forget about it, lol. I wounded an enemy and they started bleeding out. I was reloading so I used the melee button and knocked my opponent to the ground (with melee you can perform a short punch/kick combo). Since they were bleeding a whole pile of zombies swarmed my opponent and ate them alive. It looked like the death sequences from the original games, only with like 20 zombies on them.

    - Like all the RE games, you can be grabbed and half to shake free. Zombies rarely grab you though. Only if they sneak up on you really. Lickers grab you with their tongue sometimes, but mostly just smack you with it. Hunters are beasts on here. They take a lot of bullets and can jump out of nowhere, though they are pretty stupid. If you run into a Tyrant or Nemesis or anything else of large threatening size, I would just run. They do massive damage and are hard as hell to kill. They are fairly slow though, so you can avoid them. There are some other enemies too, like Crimson Head zombies, parasite infested zombies (look like a white spider is on their back), etc.

    - You can sometimes become infected by the BOWs. There are herbs littered about the areas that heal your health and prolong the time before you turn into a zombie. There are also anti-virus capsules that don't heal health, but they heal the infection. If you don't find these you soon enough you will turn into a crimson head zombie and be able to run at high speed. you can attack your own team or the other team when you are a zombie, lol.

    - Much like COD, there are no true head shots. A head shot is only a head shot if it would have killed the person anyway (just like COD). I wish there were true headshots on this game.

    - You play 4v4, but the maps are big enough and should have been 6v6 at least. There would be more human on human fighting than human on BOW. It is just a smidgeon unbalanced in my opinion. I think 6v6 would have been perfect. Though, with slant 6, that would have meant laaaaag.

    - Lag hasn't been a factor, but there aren't that many people playing it right now. We will see how it goes at midnight when the game is launched.

    - Its sometimes hard to tell enemy soldiers from zombies. They should have made your cross-hairs change colors when your bead is on an enemy (like socom does).

    - Overall, my main gripe with the online is the look speed. I have it set to the max and it is still way too slow.

    - I haven't played much campaign mode yet because I want to play it co-op. By yourself, I feel like the campaign mode is mediocre at best. Though I haven't played very far into it. i can just tell how it is going to be. Its designed for co-op and should be played that way.

Well, that is all for now. Back to the game, friends!!!
  • At some point I do intend to take another crack at the RE2 cart I had for N64, just need the will and time to buy one off the internet or find one with sheer luck locally. It's just not super high on my list as I'm on a gameboy (all 3 versions) bender since early December.

I really do want to know more how this game handles, and hell if the sign isn't expensive I'd love that just not all the other junk when getting the game.
  • @Tanooki - Yeah this one is even more action based then Revelations. You can run and shoot, dive and shoot (though your accuracy is shit when doing this, lol), duck behind cover, toss grenades easily without changing weapons/etc. Its like a third person military shooter game with the military part substituted for Resident Evil.

Its basically Resident Evil's version of Call of Duty, Socom, Halo, Ghost Recon, Gears of War, etc. Its not meant to be like the classic or even the modern RE games. Its a spin-off with RE elements. If you know this going in and you like RE and shooters, you will enjoy this game. Its not as polished as the big time shooters, but that should be expected. Slant 6 isn't the best by any stretch in the first place. I do give them props here though. If they can polish this thing up with some updates, it will be really sweet.

There are also tons of stats for all of you stat gurus like myself.
  • That's interesting enough for me to get interested. Any shot you've done RE5 and can compare that one to Revelations at all? I know I'm a bit off topic, but it has been nagging me you can't get honest reviews anymore online as they're either plants or paid for suck up stuff on the other end of it.
  • God, I want that sign so bad.
  • I was not a big fan of RE5. I did enjoy the co-op aspect and had fun with my buds playing together, but it did not feel much like RE5 to me. With that said, I liked the direction that the story went and thoroughly enjoyed that part of the game. The gameplay was just too actiony and gimmicky for me. Too many explosions and over-the-topness in my eyes. For the main series, I like the old style best. With that said, I do really like RE4, but I thought that was as fr as the series should have gone (with the action). RE4 might not have had the old scares, but it definitely had tension and uneasiness at times. RE5 took the new formula waaaay too far. No tension, pure solid action. Never feared/cared/worried about dying. Puzzles were nearly gone altogether or so simple it made me cringe. RE5 was a good, fun, action game. However, there was zero "Survival" and very little "Horror" (i'm counting the gore and monsters as horror here...yeah, I know that is stretching it ).

I have not completed Revelations, but I am thoroughly enjoying the game so far. It definitely feels like Resident Evil to me and though some of the monster design is a little...meh. That, along with the stupid item scanner thing, are my only real complaints. I like the gameplay, setting, atmosphere, combat, and nearly everything else about. They seem to have added several throwback odds and ends into Revelations, which at least tells me they are trying and to keep the game feeling like Resident Evil. Of course, this game is still the new style, but it is more like RE4 than it is RE5 and that is fine by me. I liked RE4 a lot even though it was worlds different than the old style. There is a reason RE4 was game of the year and RE5 wasn't. If it wasn't for the cool co-op and the story/plot, RE5 would have possibly been my least favorite RE game (well maybe not worse than Survivor ).

You are never off topic when it comes to Resident Evil ! I am always down to give my opinions on them.
  • RE 4 is one of the best ps2 games period.
