Need help with TV purchase

I'm moving in two weeks and am FINALLY getting my own collector/gamer room.  I need to purchase a TV but the room is small (pro 8x8ish) so I'm leaning towards a 40".  My only experience with HDTV's is Plasma's.  I have 2 and love them but Plasma is mostly 50" and above.  I mostly game on my XboX 360 but plan on having many consoles hooked up to it.  This is what I found, but, again I have no experience with LCD or LED TV's.

Samsung brand has been good to me.  I want to keep it around 1K or under.  Is the extra $$$ worth going LED?  3D is not important either.  Any one have some suggestions?

  • i own about 4 40 inch lcd hdtvs, they are cheap and iv never had any issues. Dont be afraid to buy offbrands chances are they are made with the same components and in the same factories as the over priced ones. ALso newegg has a greata return DOA policy. If you keep an eye on deals 40 inch can be had for 350 or so on newegg.
  • go with a Sony Google TV..Internet built in...Android Market place....Awesome for games, tv...netflix..email...controller is just like a ps3 controller with keyboard attatchment!

You cant go wrong with this tv.....
  • Thank you for the replies. For this TV really all I need is a slick picture and nice refresh rate? for the gaming. I have a couple smart 3D TV's primarily for movies, internet, PC etc.

  • Well unless you do PC gaming, consoles just do 30, sometimes 60Hz so that shouldn't be a problem. I get a 36" LG TV for christmas. Plasma. It's okay, the menus are slow though, only power button on TV lights up so using the keys i nthe dark is a no go, Xbox 360 looks great and runs great, NES and SNES look meh on it, but there's no lag in game mode. It's okay. I'd say LG TV's are okay, but I like my neighbors Visio LCD a lot better. It's an american product and is a little bit better from the picture I've seen.

    Thanks, good info.

  • Is the room lighted or dark? If its lighted go with an 40 inch LCD....Samsung is the most superior brand on the market, has been since about 06. Most bang for your buck, best customer service bar none.

This is 120HZ which is much more fluid at full high def then 60 Hz, and its only $50 more then the 60 HZ

If the room is dark, stick with the plasma

Thanks!!! What about 720p vs 1080p, thoughts?  I love the idea of sticking with Plasma.  The room is somewhat dark.

  • Here is the T.V. I have in my man cave and I like it alot. I would suggest it to anyone

  • Stick with Samsung. They are great TVs. I have a 32" 720p in the bedroom and a 46" 1080p in the living room. Everything looks great on either, but I'm a fan of 720p. They are cheaper, and if ya notice the subtle differences between them, you're lookin too hard. Everything looks good on a 720p. The perfect medium.

Edit* on another note...I crate a shitload of LCDs and Plasmas for work. (I ready things for shipping/moving  that the movers don't do, including art, pianos...whatever) As far as durability goes...LCD hands down.

720p v 1080 p more dpi, better resolution. Still, In reality unless you have them sitting next to each other......really really tough to notice.
  • If you're getting a plasma, unless it's a small dinky 15" for a kitchen, 1080p is the only option...

And no it's not, 720p resolution looks terrible when compared to a 1080p TV running a 1080p signal, lol.
  • I wish I had something in 240Hz+, but I'm good with the standard 120hz. But man, once you hit them high #s, things start to look a little TOO real...

The only time when I DON'T want an HD tv is when I wanna play me some Duck Hunt.
  • Lots of conflicting info here, I sold tons of tvs at Best Buy, so I'll just say this:

There is a difference in resolution, contrast ratio, and screen type. I guess eyesight plays a factor, but the best way for you to choose a tv would be to go to a place like Best Buy that has a wall of tvs, and talk with one of the sales reps that can give you answers to the difference between the models and what you are seeing (Not trying to push Best Buy, but I can't think of another place with comparable selection and knowledgeable staff). This way you can pick a picture you like for a price you consider reasonable. Tvs change so often, it is almost impossible to recommend anything bought over 6 months ago without overlooking a better deal with better specs.

I personally would always recommend 1080p on 37" or over due to pixelation visibility, which is moreso seen on higher refresh rates like 120Hz

Plasmas have a nice color range, but are giant and get extremely hot compared to LCD. LEDs emit almost no heat, are very energy friendly, and are paper thin/lightweight. They hang on a wire literally.

It is really worth it to have a specialist show you the differences, as long as you make the decision yourself, based on the differences you can actually see and justify spending cash on.

    My personal recommendations:

    LED

    1080p

    120Hz

  • Just make sure you get something that plays duck hunt. Everything else is secondary.
