Yoshi... Saddle or Shell?

I've always seen it as a saddle, but we got into a (super awesome) debate about it in chat and I thought I'd get some additional opinions.

HELP US END THE DEBATE!

SUPER MARIO WORLD YOSHI

NEW SUPER MARIO BROS WII YOSHI

Clearly, it has changed in both size and color over the years, which may signify that it is neither a saddle nor a shell, but a malignant tumor.

What do you think?

  • it's a spot
  • I think its a shell (from a koopa-troopa) used as a saddle
  • I gonna have to with my heart hear and say it's a shell.
  • I'm pretty sure it's a little backpack that he keeps his drugs in.
  • Saddle. Riding on a shell would hurt like fuck.
  • It was a saddle back in the day but has turned into a shell, much like his nose has become 3X bigger cause Yoshi is a fuckin drunk.
  • I assume it's still a saddle, but it definitely looks like a shell now.
  • Clearly it's a Red Koopa-Troopa shell.

Yoshi is a cognitive carnivorous dinosaur and uses the shell as intimidation towards other Koopa-troopa's. . .it just so happens that it functions well as a saddle.

  • I'd also like to point out on games like brawl, there's stitching in it, proving it's a saddle. There it looks like a shell. SMW it looks like a saddle too. It's both at the end of the day.
  • Its a saddle... and have you ever noticed that mario smacks yoshi in the head in Super Mario World to get his tounge to stick out?

I've never noticed... i'm gonna go play it right now though.

  • Originally, there was just a saddle, and now, it's a Koopa Shell used as a saddle. That's my take. Either way, it's at least a saddle.

How does it stay attached? there are no straps to hold it onto his back. The only explanation would be some sort of super adhesive glue or some kind of surgical application directly onto his back.

    Poor Yoshi
  • It's not a tumma!
  • In the 25th Anniversary booklet that came with Mario All Stars Wii, it says "Yoshi was originally going to be a type of koopa, and his shell became a saddle".

So in development, it was a shell. It's strange that newer Yoshi's have a humped saddle now though.

I do believe it's a biological part of his body though, grown for the purpose of being a saddle. Probably soft, mmmmmm.
  • Enuff of this shell/saddle/tumor talk. Anybody notice the hands? They started out as lil bitty T-Rex arms, and now he has big ass Andre the Giant, frying pan hands and by looking, I would guess another finger and a thumb were added. Apparently, dino-like creatures can cram 1000's of years of evolution into 2 decades, but couldn't tell that the earth was getting really cold and find a goddamn cave to stay warm, or walk AROUND a stinkin tar pit to prevent extinction.

    Nice... confirmation!

I was too lazy to actually look - although I was actually kinda hoping the debate would just continue on. It still doesn't explain how it's attached though....

How else would he play Mario Party?

I think it's biological, grown because evolution deemed it useful since people liked to ride them? I'm getting too deep into this

  • I always thought it was part of the egg when he hatches that kinda just got stuck.

@ Scotty- I am amazed he doesn't fall on his face constantly. Big head, giant hands and no counter weight... WTF happened to his tail?!

Like the frog and lizards that play those iPhone games....with his tounge. Let us not forget, Yoshi is an original. Then all the the sudden there are eggs, and then different colors of Yoshi(s). He's a deadbeat dad as well as a boozehound. Yoshi is the Old Dirty Bastard of video gaming. Don't let his non-alarming appearance fool you.

  • Hmmm, what does that shell remind me of in SMB Wii?? Oh yes, The Men on Films!!

It also appears that mario has been using Yoshi's "spikes" (or whatever the hell those are) for handles over the years, as one of them seems to have been ripped off at some point in time. Although, maybe Yoshi's body absorbed it back into itself and repurposed it into bigger arms or something... that could explain your point....  we don't REALLY know how dinosaurs work.

(did I mention I love this conversation?)

There is a drawing of this (I think in the SMW manual) and Mario is pointing forward and giving Yoshi a command I guess.  I'll try to find it, but I rememeber thinking it looked violent too as a kid.

    Edit: Here it is:

  • The information in the booklet is false, meaning its a cover up. The saddle/shell is actually a mole that has obviously grown and changed colors much like moles do. Two days before Yoshi's 14th birthday he went to the doctors and the doctor delivered horrible news that nobody ever wants to hear.

Yes, that it was in fact malignant...cancer of the back scale in Yoshi's case, actually very common in his breed of dinosaur.

Anyways, Yoshi decided to fight the cancer where he received treatments of Chemotherapy, and bi-weekly injections of steroids, resulting in the eradication of the cancer and huge beastly arms with extra fingers and thumb growth.

The saddle/shell that we are seeing now is actually a prosthetic, so that people didn't start asking questions as to where the saddle/shell went.

my wife must be yoshi then  /sigh
  • What bothers me most is that he grew knees and thumbs. I don't even think it's the same guy.

Maybe it's because SMW Era Yoshi was just much younger back then and when Yoshi's grow up they grow thumbs, develop knees and all of the other differences shown between the 2 pics above. We don't know how dinosaurs in Dinosaur World evolve... maybe they are like Pokemon - taking on completely different shapes/traits as they grow up?

The saddle thing is still a mystery (20 posts later, still no one has explained how it stays on).
