Kid Icarus Uprising for 3ds

So I got my copy of Kid Icarus Uprising for 3ds today. It was delivered right to my door from EB games. I got the extra cards that came with it as a pre-order gift.

First thoughts on the game are pretty good for me. I really like the first level. Its pretty cool haveing 2 completely different game styles. Except like the dumbass that I am, I tried the 3-d effect and got a major headache in about 15 seconds. I knew I would but for some dumb reason I had to try it out.

I like how aware the game is. It really realtes to the first game for NES I thought that was pretty cool. I wont say to much because I think you should try it for yourselves.

So far I think its a pretty soild game. I will have to play more though

  • I'm awaiting its arrival on my doorstep!
  • Oh I shoulda added that it comes with a stand for your 3ds that surprisingly I really liked. It was the perfect height and made the games controls much easy to handle ( this is just my opinion of course )
  • I used a $20 gift card I won here a few months back (thanks!) and scored it for 1/2 off at Toys R Us. I preordered it to get free shipping but I know it went slowest option. I imagine as long as the pony express rider and his horse are properly fed and watered I'll get it sometime next week.

I think the stand with it is a blessing and a curse. It's awesome as it relieves the pain of playing stylus sketch games which was a tendon stressing nightmare on FPS games with the old DS. That said though, it also shows a shortcoming of the system and kind of kills the portability of it in that respect. Maybe a circlepad pro would be best? I already have RE Revelations and Ace Combat which use it too.

The circle pad pro only works for lefties.... you still have to use the stylus unfortunately. That being said, I'm about 20% through the game right now and I'm really enjoying it. However, I also find the stand to be a nusence, as it slides around on the table as i'm playing... maybe if it had some rubber grips on the bottom (i guess i could add my own) it'd work better... I think it's silly that they'd even think to include such an accessory for game thats meant to be played ON A PORTABLE DEVICE though.

I've also been enjoying the 3d Classics Kid Icarus, (which i got free as a preorder bonus) which I absolutely LOVE! The added backgrounds really make the game pop and makes it feel fresh. Highly recommended if you're a fan of the original NES game.

  • I love it this game is great, havent had to much time to play it though.
  • Yeah like I said the stand is nice, but it kind of defeats the point of things too. I know I'll end up using it on occasion with some stuff as it would perhaps be handy at home. The trip to me though ultimately is that I got mine through TRU so no 3D Classics version for me sadly. I kind of lost track of those anyway as the last one I got was Twinbee and I know I don't have Kirby. I probably should look to see what I'm missing on those as I find them interesting.
  • Got it yesterday. But i won`t play untill i finished Mario 3D first.
  • I have never been to caught up with the portability of handheld systems, ever since I got my Game Gear way back when I always had to sit next to the electrically outlet anyways because my parents never bought me batteries. I rarely ever take my systems out of my house but if I do its usually to play at work during breaks where I play at a table. Im not a gamer on the go at all, so for me the stand works just great and have to give it credit because it does fold up pretty nice and neat.

Yeah, I hardly ever "travel" with my 3ds... but I think it's silly to design controls for a handheld game system around the use of a stand. I'm not complaining about the game - I enjoy it quite a bit... but the point of handhelds is the ability to hold them.... IN YOUR HAND.

I too felt the wrath of the game gear battery life as a child, so I know your pain very well... I kinda feel a bit of DejaVu when playing my 3ds for 2 hours and the battery light comes on.

  • I think its really cool that the game comes with a stand but sometimes its more comfortable to play with out the stand. I think the stand was a good idea, becuase someone else might find it hard to play without the stand.
  • I also picked it up. I'm really enjoying it so far, the stand makes it pretty comfortable for me but even still I play it in short bursts of maybe an hour or so. I really like some of the nods to the original Kid Icarus
  • Hey guys, here's a heads up

Best buy is selling this game for 29.99 this weeks salr
  • I got mine in the mail today from TRU and wow, the little I hit of it was damned fun, and that stand is helpful alright as I have a desk at the right height for it I work at. I only did the first stage twice and messed around with a couple mergers and dunking eggs for random freebies before the battery went to 0 and shut off. I'm going to have to get used to flying in circles while shooting because when I forget you easily get hit. It's an amazing title though, the detail is some of the best I've seen yet. It's like a detail level of quality Resident Evil has, except it's cartoony instead of all serious.
  • I preordered it from gamestop, and I'm really enjoying it so far.
  • I just picked this game up yesterday from Target. They were running a sale, buy 2 games get one free. So I picked up Super Mario 3D, Ocarina of Time, and Kid Icarus. I'm liking it so far. Only play it for about 30 minutes last night before my battery died. I'm a die hard kid icarus fan and this game was one of the main reason I bought a 3DS.
  • i picked it up on the best buy special today, played up to about level 4, pretty good. i like the stage format reminds me of the old game (shooter level/castle/boss) - the 3d flying and shooting is awesome. cant wait to get a little farther into it.
  • I played it while we drove to MGC this weekend and couldnt play more than the first stage because my hand was cramping up too much. Did they not play test this damn thing?

It also just feels like I'm playing House of the Dead or something...all I do is hold down "L" and just aim around at enemies and watch them die.

So far I'm not impressed at all. I love the sound and the graphics but the gameplay thus far isnt doing anything for me. I dont feel like I'm playing Kid Icarus at all.
  • Dont hate the Icarus so far its one of the best games of 2012, and the best resurrection of any game released within the past 25 years.

When I was playing it at a demo booth I mentioned to the nintendo rep if he had ever played space harrier.  He never heard that game >.> hehe

thats what kid Icarus reminds me of
  • You know that game fits well enough to a point, but I believe Starfox Adventures (the few and far between arwing bits) if I recall right had independent fire from flying around which is what this game does in flight, and then on the ground, it's kind of like the other -- Starfox Armada, on the on foot stages as you move around and then use the other stick(stylus on DS) to aim and then fire with another button.

It's really a great game and it very well captures the spirit and designs of Kid Icarus of old in 3D. You have your open areas you scale towards a destination. After you arrive, then you navigate a dungeon or a platforming area (which is how the original worked), and finally a boss fight at the end of that total area/chapter.

I can see where it would be a pain in the ass on your tendons in your hand though, all the old DS first and third person shooters suffered it too, it's just the drawback of using a stylus to aim because the more into it you get the more pressure you exert which causes strain on your hands. That's entirely why they included that free stand which is fantastic, and if you're in a spot where you can't, just have a seat, pop your leg up, and brace the 3DS against that and let your leg take the pressure.
  • I just picked it up and I didn't realize it wasn't a DS title and I don't own a 3DS yet. Also, the 3D effect doesn't work for me since I'm legally blind in one eye.
  • You really don't need to use it by any means. It's a nice treat seeing depth especially in the flight mode, but turning it off will not make the game any better or worse. The only game I know that does have minor issues not using 3D is Super Mario Land because they do have some pipe rooms with an isometric view stack of blocks you have to navigate around to get some item/coin and it's a depth puzzle.
  • Im thinking of getting this with my new 3DS this weekend. Yup starting a whole new collection. Or restarting as I've owned a

DS lite in the past and foolishly traded it in with all games. :/

The only thing dissuading me is the controls, but I kkinda want the cards and stand for collecting sake.
  • Beat level 10 now. Got used to the controls but i think they distract the gameplay experience way too much.
  • Me being a lefty, at first this game was a pain in the ass. Then, after realizing that I could use the circle pad pro, loved it. Takes a little to get used to the controls, but after you do, this game is loads of fun. I also like the idols, reminds me of the trophy system in Super Smash Bros Melee, since it is the same creator and everything. I was also never a fan of the original NES game, but played the 3D version, and for some reason I love it now. Maybe because I have a new found love for Pit, but who knows. Anywho, game is awesome, but collecting those AR cards is a pain in the ass. Google is a good way to get scans of them if you don't own any of the extras though.
  • So I am left handed and have it sitting here sealed beside me. I don't have a circle pad pro. Is it even worth playing left handed without the circle pad?
  • I'm confused....they are on eBay but not on any websites for sale and gamestop has them releasing in July. $40-50'on eBay too.
  • As a lefty and since I don't have the circle pad pro, controlling the reticule with the face buttons works just fine for now and mapping the attack button to R makes it play close to a console first/third person shooter. I've read reviews that comment on the games' addicting qualities and I'm starting to understand what they mean. The controls aren't perfect but I can see myself coming back to this game again and again.
  • Oh yeah, picked up a 3DS finally, on a side note lol
  • Sorry for the late post.  I think being able to play the right handed is dependent upon the individual gamer.  I know for myself, it was very hard for me to do so.  Playing using the cirlce pad made a huge difference to me.  I'm sure if I had kept using standard right handed controls I would have become relatively good with them, but, like I said, the circle pad definitely made it easier for me to play.
