A Must see Homebrew

Was reading issue #228 of GameInformer and came across a homebrew project by some guys that took em 6 years.

Check out their homebrew project (its in flash) at http://abobosbigadventure.com/ and give em some props!

  • Oh man I love playing that game. It was shown to me in chat a while back and it's a lot of fun. Definitely recommend it.
  • Yeah, I'm hooked, they did a really good job, I really like the Mario feel but the Zelda part was obviously the best (yes I'm biased).
  • Not to be the forum police or anything, but... http://www.nintendoage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=31&threadid=66199

But I hate how stuff like this gets into GameInformer and more legitimate homebrews that are actually put on cartridge get no attention at all.

Yes. This is no more of a homebrew than any other flash game out there,

That's not being entirely fair to the project.

It has way more polish and content than most Flash games, and I think it deserves a little more credit than you seem to be giving.

If they throw ads in the game, I think it's more than fair to be honest.

There's plenty of well polished flash games out there, sadly most of them are on facebook, but there's still a great deal of good flash games available. This just happened to get publicity and notoreity more than the rest.

Yeah, it is very polished for a flash game. I just don't think it compares to what it takes to program and create an NES game. Even assuming they are comparable, I still think it's a shame they generally completely fly under the radar. Not to mention when they see this, everyone's like "OMG!@!# NOSTALGIA!@!#!" yet I would think an actual physical copy of a brand-new NES game on a cartridge would be more nostalgic.

  • Nightowl, are you me? Because you and I share the same outlook on the subject matter! I believe the reason for that is that there's far more money to be made in a flash game than a pile of 6502 opcodes, seeing as how the latter is legally a system that is no longer supported.

And 6 years? Did this by any chance used to be the Pickleman game? Because I remember something about that game about that long ago.

I thought it was getting notoriety for being an awesome game, which it is. To me, nostalgia is about a game itself, not the physical cartridge, especially when tons of time was spent blowing on the cartridge trying to get the damn thing to turn on I would have loved to have had the game on a cartridge, too. It might have been that they wouldn't have been able to achieve all they wanted to because of memory/system limitations, it could have been laziness, or it could have been as Luigi said, because there's more money in it. Either way, it's a great game and it's worth knowing about.

I see your point. I just wish homebrews like Battle Kid, Assimilate, and eventually, Nomolos will get attention from magazines like GameInformer. Or at least a little article on IGN would be nice. Flash games get all the lovin'.
  • I know BK got some attention from Screw Attack, and maybe another big site or 2, though I'm not 100% certain. Sivak would be able to tell you about that though.
  • Lol, how many threads is this game gonna get?
